How the calculator works
Your FIRE number is your annual spending divided by your withdrawal rate. With the 4% rule that's 25 times your yearly spending — the amount where you can (historically) withdraw enough each year to live on without running out.
Time to FIRE is worked out month by month: your current net worth grows by the expected return, and your monthly savings are added, until you reach your FIRE number.
